As the first and only multi-species rescue center for native animals in Liberia, the Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary operates in close cooperation with the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) and the Wildlife Crime Task Force (WCTF). We provide critical veterinary care and rehabilitation for residents confiscated from the illegal pet trade and bushmeat markets. To date, our efforts have provided sanctuary for over 1,000 animals of 81 species, with more than 500 successfully returned to their natural habitats.
Our primary goal is to return every animal to the wild, while providing permanent, high-quality care for those unable to survive on their own. Beyond direct rescue, we serve as a vital hub for environmental education, promoting the laws that protect Liberia’s wildlife and fostering a culture of conservation through local and international volunteerism. We strive to inspire the public to recognize the inherent value of keeping wildlife wild.
Our ultimate vision is a future where the sanctuary is no longer needed. We work toward a day when national awareness and education have evolved so deeply that the killing, consumption, and capture of wildlife have ceased entirely. Until that goal is reached, we remain dedicated to protecting Liberia’s natural heritage and invite you to join us in this essential work.
